PPE Introduces Larger 5-Micron Oil Filter for 3.0L Duramax Engines

PPE has introduced a new MicroPure XR oil filter for the 3.0L Duramax, offering a larger filter housing, finer-rated filtration media, and substantially more media area than the factory ACDelco PF66 filter.

The new filter, part number 114000660, joins PPE's existing 10-micron oil filter, part number 114000650. Both versions will remain available, giving owners another option when servicing their engines.

PPE provided DemonWorks with an early look at the new filter ahead of its wider retail release. I received three demonstration samples, including one that PPE had already cut open to expose the internal construction. We compared the new design against the original PPE filter and the factory PF66, then installed it on an LM2 display engine to examine its fitment.

What Changed With the New MicroPure XR Filter?

The most significant change is the move from PPE's existing 10-micron nominal filtration rating to a 5-micron nominal rating. PPE is using the same type of MicroPure XR filtration media already found in its larger 6.6L Duramax oil filters.

The new filter also has a noticeably larger diameter and greater height than the existing 3.0L PPE filter.

According to the specifications printed on PPE's new packaging, the MicroPure XR contains 295 square inches of filtration media, representing a 120% increase over the factory filter. PPE also claims 6.6 times the dirt-holding capacity of the stock filter.

For comparison, the existing PPE 114000650 contains 222 square inches of media, approximately 70% more than the factory filter.

New premium option

The new filter provides approximately 33% more media area than the existing PPE version.

PPE also lists an additional 0.3 quarts of oil capacity compared with the factory filter.

The internal construction includes a high-temperature neodymium magnet intended to capture ferrous particles, a reinforced base plate with larger oil passages, a metal center tube, a silicone anti-drainback valve, a heavy-duty coil spring, and a bypass valve incorporating a steel and NBR poppet.

The 5-micron figure is a nominal rating, not an absolute filtration specification. A complete efficiency comparison would require particle-capture efficiency data at the relevant micron sizes. The larger media area and finer-rated media are meaningful design changes, but they do not independently establish a specific reduction in engine wear or longer engine life.

Comparing the New Filter With the Original PPE Design

PPE's existing 10-micron filter has been available for several years, and I've previously examined its internal construction and tested its operation on the 3.0L Duramax.

In my earlier testing, I did not observe a change in oil pressure differential attributable to the original PPE filter.

The original design remains a good option. The introduction of the MicroPure XR doesn't make that filter obsolete. Instead, PPE is adding a higher-tier filtration option for owners who place additional emphasis on oil filtration.

During the comparison, the physical differences were immediately apparent. The new filter is considerably wider than both the factory PF66 and PPE's existing 10-micron version. It is also taller than the original PPE design.

Having a cutaway sample made it possible to examine the new media alongside the existing design. I also compared it with a previously cut-open PPE filter intended for the 6.6L Duramax, which uses the same filtration media.

Installation Revealed an Oil Pan Clearance Concern

One important observation came when installing the new filter on my LM2 display engine.

The larger diameter brought the filter housing into contact with the lip of the engine oil pan. On this particular engine, I had to create a small amount of additional clearance at the pan lip before the filter could be installed.

This is something owners should be aware of.

Although the new filter is intended as a replacement for applications using the PF66, its larger diameter reduces the available clearance around the mounting location. The amount of clearance may vary with the engine and oil pan configuration.

I have not yet established whether this interference will occur on production vehicles or how consistently it might appear across LM2 and LZ0 applications. The observation was made on a display engine, not through a completed installation and road test in a vehicle.

The filter also extended slightly below the bottom of the oil pan on the display engine. Factory vehicles have additional shielding in this area, so clearance to surrounding components and shielding needs to be verified.

I would not recommend modifying an oil pan to install the filter without first confirming the correct application and installation requirements with PPE.

Owners should verify fitment and adequate clearance before operating the vehicle.

Two PPE Oil Filters, Two Different Options

The factory ACDelco PF66 remains the conventional replacement filter for these applications. PPE's existing 10-micron filter offers increased media area and its own internal construction improvements over the factory design.

The new MicroPure XR takes that approach further with finer-rated filtration media and a larger filter assembly.

For owners who simply want to perform their scheduled maintenance using the factory replacement filter, the PF66 remains an option. For owners who prefer PPE's existing Premium filter design, the 114000650 will continue to be sold.

The new 114000660 is aimed at owners who want PPE's latest filtration design and are willing to pay more for the additional features.

It is important to recognize that finer filtration does not eliminate the need for scheduled oil changes, correct engine oil specifications, or other maintenance. The new filter should be considered another maintenance option rather than a substitute for those requirements.

Availability and Ordering

DemonWorkshop received an exclusive early retail allocation of XX new MicroPure XR filters ahead of wider availability, which is expected end of November 2026.

The initial allocation is limited to one new filter per customer to give more owners an opportunity to purchase one. Additional orders may be accepted through a separately identified pre-order option, subject to confirmed inventory and shipping estimates.

Both the existing 10-micron PPE filter and the new 5-micron MicroPure XR will be offered through DemonWorkshop.
