GM Google Gemini Update Now Available: How to Upgrade Your Duramax Truck’s Assistant (Step-by-Step Guide)

Duramax owners, your truck just got a major intelligence boost. General Motors is rolling out **Google Gemini** — the advanced AI successor to Google Assistant — to millions of 2022–2027 GM vehicles with Google Built-in, including Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, and other trucks equipped with compatible infotainment systems.

The official service bulletin (#26-NA-127, released April 29, 2026) gives dealerships and owners the exact steps to check eligibility and activate it. Here’s everything you need to know, including **why you should do this** and a clear how-to for filming your own video or following along in your truck.

Why Upgrade to Google Gemini in Your Duramax?

Gemini replaces the old Google Assistant with a far more capable conversational AI. It’s optional (you can switch back anytime), free via Play Store, and brings real improvements for truck life:

**Natural conversations** — Talk like you would to a person. Ask follow-ups without repeating yourself (e.g., “Find taco spots along my route… how about the highest-rated one?”).

**Smarter navigation & stops** — Add pit stops with vague requests, get real-time business info, reviews, and traffic-aware suggestions.

**Productivity while driving** — Pull info from Gmail/Calendar, summarize messages, add your ETA, translate texts, or brainstorm hands-free.

**Gemini Live** — More fluid back-and-forth chats for trip planning, learning about destinations, or even rehearsing conversations.

**Better context & integration** — Deeper ties to Maps, apps, and your truck’s system for a less robotic experience that improves over time.

For long-haul towing, remote work sites, or daily driving in a Duramax, this means safer, more useful voice commands without staring at the screen. It’s one of the largest AI rollouts in trucks yet, and early feedback highlights how much more intuitive it feels on the road.

Who Can Get It?

- 2022–2027 Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC vehicles with **Google Built-in** (RPOs IVE, IVD, IOK — Virtual Cockpit High/Mid or 3.X infotainment).

- US launch only (initially).

- Must have Android 11+ on the infotainment system.

**Note for 2022 models**: OTA radio updates may not be available, and any paid radio software update for Gemini eligibility is **not covered by warranty**.

### Step-by-Step: How to Check Eligibility and Activate Gemini

Follow these steps in your truck. Great visuals for a video — show each menu clearly.

1. **Verify Android Version (Critical First Step)**

Go to **Settings > System > About**.

Check the Android level — it must be **11 or higher**.

- 2025+ Google Built-in trucks are usually ready.

- If below 11: Go to **Settings > Updates > Check for Update**, install any OTA, then re-check.

- No OTA? It may come later (or require a paid dealer update on some MY22 trucks). You can still complete the other steps to be ready.

2. **Set Assistant Language to US English**

**Settings > Google > Google Assistant > Language**.

3. **Update Google Maps**

Open the **Maps** app → Tap the **settings gear** → Scroll to **About & Help** → Check **Version number** (format YY.MM.DDHHMM).

Needs **26.02.160000.E** or newer.

If lower, tap the build number to open the hidden Play Store page and update.

4. **Update the Google Assistant App**

Open **Play Store** → Hamburger menu (top right) → **My apps** → Install updates (especially Assistant).

Gemini is **not** a separate app — it’s an opt-in inside Assistant. Look for version **13.1.618.RC09** or higher (search “Google Assistant” in Play Store → scroll to version).

5. **Set Play Store Preferences**

Play Store → Hamburger → **Settings** → Set **App downloads preferences** and **Auto-update apps** to **Over any network**.

6. **Look for the Gemini Opt-In Popup**

After updates, restart the truck. A consent screen should appear — read and accept it yourself.

**If No Popup Appears:**

- Reboot infotainment: **Settings > Google** → Hold the **end call button** on the steering wheel for 20 seconds (vehicle in Park). Screen blanks and restarts. Try twice if needed.

- Force it: **Settings > Google > Google Assistant > Switch to use Gemini**.

- Still nothing? Your Google account may be in the 4–6 week phased ramp-up. Apps will update in the background — check again after the next ignition cycle.

**Switching Back**: **Settings > Google > Gemini** → Scroll to bottom → “Switch to use Google Assistant”.

Pro Tips for Duramax Owners

- Ensure you’re signed into a Google account in the Play Store and have an active OnStar connection (required for full functionality in many cases).

- Perform updates while parked with good Wi-Fi or cellular signal.

- Film your video? Highlight the Android version check and Maps update — those are the most common sticking points.

- Patience: Even after setup, the full rollout is staggered.

This is a big step forward for Google Built-in trucks. Gemini makes your Duramax infotainment feel modern and genuinely helpful on the road.
