2026 vs. 2027 Chevy Silverado 1500: What Actually Changed?

The 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 represents a significant redesign rather than a typical model-year update.
Chevrolet has introduced a new exterior and interior, two new V8 engines, expanded technology, revised off-road hardware and a reorganized trim lineup.
A comparison of the 2026 and 2027 Silverado ordering information also reveals several changes that are less obvious in Chevrolet's launch material.
These include revisions to axle ratios, trailering configurations, fuel capacity, ZR2 equipment and the 3.0L Duramax LZ0.
For Duramax buyers, one of the most significant differences is the disappearance of the 3.73 axle ratio previously associated with the Max Trailering Package.
The Silverado Still Has Four Engines, But Half the Lineup Is New
The 2026 Silverado 1500 offered the 2.7L TurboMax, 5.3L V8, 6.2L V8 and 3.0L Duramax.
For 2027, Chevrolet replaces the 5.3L and 6.2L V8s with new 5.7L and 6.6L V8 engines. The TurboMax and 3.0L Duramax remain, although both receive changes for the new generation.
Engine | 2027 Output |
2.7L TurboMax | 350 hp / 455 lb-ft |
3.0L Duramax LZ0 | 305 hp / 495 lb-ft |
5.7L V8 | 402 hp / 428 lb-ft |
6.6L V8 | 481 hp / 501 lb-ft |
The LZ0 retains its 305-horsepower and 495-lb-ft output, but the unchanged ratings do not mean the engine is identical to the 2026 version.
GM has identified several targeted updates to the LZ0 for 2027, including changes involving the piston, turbo vane, next-generation NOx sensor, sealing and fuel-injector corrosion protection.
The TurboMax also receives an important drivetrain change. For 2027, all four Silverado engines are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
The 3.0L Duramax Loses Its 3.73 Axle Option
One of the more significant changes for Duramax buyers involves the rear axle.
For 2026, the LZ0 could be paired with the familiar GU5 3.23 axle or, when properly configured with the NHT Max Trailering Package, a GT4 3.73 axle.
The 2026 ordering guide specifically states that NHT includes the GT4 3.73 axle ratio when the LZ0 Duramax is ordered.
The 2026 NHT package included considerably more than an axle-ratio change. Chevrolet also specified a 9.76-inch rear axle, enhanced cooling radiator, revised shock tuning, heavier-duty rear springs, increased rear gross axle weight rating and a 220-amp alternator.
The 2027 guide presents a different arrangement. GU6 3.42 is required with the TurboMax, while GU5 3.23 is used with the other available engines. The 3.73 axle is no longer shown in this section of the 2027 guide.
This represents a substantial gearing difference compared with a 2026 LZ0 equipped with NHT. Moving from a 3.73 to a 3.23 axle reduces axle torque multiplication by approximately 13.4 percent in the same transmission gear.
Engine speed at a given road speed and transmission ratio is reduced by a similar percentage.
That does not provide enough information by itself to determine how the 2027 truck will perform while towing.
Transmission calibration, cooling capacity, GVWR, GCWR, tire diameter and other chassis changes also influence the final towing characteristics.
However, the elimination of the diesel's 3.73 configuration is an important mechanical change.
Max Trailering Has Changed
The change in axle ratio becomes more interesting when the complete Max Trailering configuration is considered.
The 2026 NHT package was effectively a collection of mechanical upgrades. In addition to the LZ0's 3.73 axle ratio, the package included the larger rear axle, additional cooling, heavier rear springs, revised shock tuning and increased RGAWR.
The 2027 configuration needs to be evaluated somewhat differently because the truck itself has changed substantially.
Chevrolet continues to offer increased trailering capability on certain configurations, but the previous Duramax-specific 3.73 arrangement is no longer shown.
This may help explain some of the differences between the towing specifications of the two generations, although the axle change should not be treated as the sole cause without additional engineering information from GM.
The 2027 LZ0 Has Several Internal Updates
GM continues to use the LZ0 designation for the 3.0L Duramax, and its advertised output remains unchanged at 305 horsepower and 495 lb-ft of torque.
For 2027, however, GM has identified targeted improvements involving the piston, turbo vane, next-generation NOx sensor, sealing and fuel-injector corrosion protection. The DEF level indication system has also been revised.
The wording GM has used is important. These are described as targeted improvements rather than a completely new generation of the engine.
At this point, GM has not provided enough technical detail to determine exactly what changed in each component.
The piston update could involve combustion characteristics, durability or oil control. Changes to the variable-geometry turbocharger vane could affect airflow, exhaust backpressure, EGR operation or exhaust temperature management.
The next-generation NOx sensor is particularly interesting because of its role in SCR operation and emissions monitoring.
Those possibilities remain engineering analysis rather than confirmed explanations from GM.
A better understanding should become possible once 2027 service information and replacement part numbers can be compared directly with the 2026 LZ0.
A 34-Gallon Fuel Tank Significantly Increases Duramax Range
Fuel capacity is another important change for 2027.
The new Silverado offers an approximately 34-gallon extended-range fuel tank.
The ordering guide shows NLA as standard equipment on ZR2 and available or included on certain other configurations.
TurboMax is specifically excluded from the extended-range tank.
For the Duramax, the additional capacity has the potential to provide a substantial increase in highway range. Chevrolet has advertised more than 900 miles of potential highway driving range based on its estimated 27-mpg highway figure.
At 27 mpg, 34 gallons represents a theoretical 918-mile range. Actual range will vary considerably with speed, weather, terrain, payload and towing, but the additional capacity should be especially useful for owners who travel long distances or tow frequently.
The 2027 ZR2 Receives Major Mechanical Changes
The ZR2 retains the basic off-road formula of a factory lift, Multimatic DSSV dampers and driver-selectable locking differentials, but Chevrolet has expanded the package considerably for 2027.
The new ZR2 uses 285/75R18C on/off-road tires, with the ordering guide also showing a matching full-size spare.
The suspension continues to use Multimatic DSSV dampers but adds jounce-control dampers. Front and rear driver-selectable electronic locking differentials remain part of the ZR2 hardware.
Combined with the larger tires and 34-gallon fuel tank, these changes make the 2027 ZR2 substantially different mechanically from the outgoing truck.
ZR2 Moves Further Upmarket Inside
Chevrolet has also added considerably more premium equipment to the ZR2.
One of the more notable additions is massaging front seats. The 2027 guide identifies AF6 as the driver power massage seat and AKE as the front-passenger power massage seat, with both listed as standard equipment on ZR2.
This is also an important distinction between ZR2 and High Country. On High Country, the massage functionality is associated with the optional High Country Premium Package, while it is shown as standard equipment on ZR2.
Heated and ventilated front seats are also standard on ZR2.
These additions move ZR2 beyond its previous role as primarily an off-road-focused trim and give it equipment more commonly associated with luxury-oriented trucks.
The Silverado Gets an Entirely New Digital Interior
The redesigned interior is one of the largest changes across the entire 2027 Silverado lineup.
The new Chevrolet Infotainment System uses a 16.3-inch center display, while a 12.2-inch Driver Information Center is also standard across the lineup.
ZR2 and High Country add an 11.5-inch front-passenger display.
The new system retains wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto while incorporating Google built-in services, connected applications, navigation capability and natural voice recognition.
ZR2 and High Country also receive a 15-inch head-up display as standard equipment.
The result is a much broader technology upgrade than simply installing a larger center screen.
Super Cruise Expands Across the Silverado Lineup
Super Cruise also becomes a much more prominent part of the Silverado lineup for 2027.
The ordering guide shows the AS3 Super Cruise Package as standard equipment on both ZR2 and High Country.
It is available on certain Silverado and Trail Boss configurations when the required supporting equipment is installed.
This is particularly notable on ZR2 because it combines long-distance driver-assistance technology with a truck equipped with 35-inch-class tires, DSSV suspension and locking differentials.
For owners who travel significant highway distances before reaching trails, campsites or towing destinations, the combination broadens the ZR2's intended use considerably.
Cameras and Driver Assistance Receive Major Updates
The 2027 truck also introduces additional camera and driver-assistance capability.
ZR2 receives forward- and rearward-facing underbody cameras with washers and lens protectors as standard equipment.
The same system is available on Trail Boss with the required packages.
The new generation also expands automatic emergency braking and cyclist/pedestrian detection functions, while higher trims incorporate equipment such as the Rear Camera Mirror, surround-view cameras and additional trailering camera provisions.
These systems are increasingly integrated into the truck's basic electrical architecture rather than existing as isolated luxury options.
Chevrolet Simplifies the Trim Structure
The previous Silverado lineup included WT, Custom, Custom Trail Boss, LT, RST, LT Trail Boss, ZR2, LTZ and High Country.
The 2027 guide presents a more streamlined structure:
WT, Custom, Custom Trail Boss, Silverado, Trail Boss, ZR2 and High Country.
The change reduces some of the overlap that developed within the previous-generation lineup while retaining distinct work, value, off-road and premium configurations.
The new Silverado trim effectively occupies much of the position previously held by LT, while Trail Boss becomes its own more clearly defined trim rather than carrying the LT Trail Boss name.
The Off-Road Lineup Gets Larger Tires
Larger tires are not exclusive to ZR2.
Custom Trail Boss and Trail Boss move to approximately 34-inch-class tires, while ZR2 steps up to the 285/75R18C configuration.
This creates a more defined mechanical progression within Chevrolet's factory off-road lineup. Trail Boss models continue to provide the factory lift and off-road-focused suspension, while ZR2 adds the DSSV dampers, jounce-control dampers and front and rear selectable locking differentials.
For buyers considering an immediate aftermarket tire upgrade on an outgoing truck, the larger factory tire packages may reduce the need for modification.
High Country Also Receives More Technology
High Country remains the luxury-focused Silverado but receives many of the same major technology changes as ZR2.
The 11.5-inch passenger display, 15-inch head-up display, Rear Camera Mirror and Super Cruise are all shown as standard equipment.
Massage seating is handled differently than on ZR2.
The guide lists AF6 and AKE as available on High Country through the WJE High Country Premium Package rather than standard equipment.
That distinction could become important for buyers comparing similarly priced ZR2 and High Country configurations.
The 2027 Duramax Changes Extend Beyond Engine Output
The LZ0 retains its 305-horsepower and 495-lb-ft rating for 2027, but several important aspects of the Duramax Silverado have changed around those familiar specifications.
The engine receives targeted hardware and emissions-system revisions. The previous 3.73 Max Trailering axle configuration is no longer shown, while the 3.23 axle continues for the Duramax. A 34-gallon extended-range fuel tank becomes available and is standard on ZR2. The redesigned truck also adds substantially more technology, safety equipment and off-road capability.
For ZR2 buyers, the changes are particularly extensive. Larger tires, revised suspension hardware, increased fuel capacity, Super Cruise, massaging seats, a passenger display and the redesigned digital interior make the 2027 model substantially different from the outgoing truck even though the Duramax's peak output has not increased.
There are still several questions that specification sheets cannot answer. Actual payload stickers will show how the added equipment affects usable payload, while real-world testing will be needed to evaluate fuel economy, towing behavior and the effect of the 3.23 axle on configurations that previously could be ordered with a 3.73.
The first production trucks should also allow direct comparison of 2026 and 2027 LZ0 part numbers, calibrations and emissions components. Those comparisons will provide a clearer picture of how extensive GM's targeted LZ0 updates actually are.
