  • Chevrolet Tahoe (2024)

  • GMC Sierra 1500 (2024)

What's the Issue? GM has identified a condition where the steering gear motor bolts on your vehicle might be loose, potentially affecting the steering's performance and safety.

Why Should You Care? This service update applies not only to vehicles in dealer inventory but also to those already in the hands of customers that might return to the dealership for any reason. This bulletin will be valid until the end of your vehicle's New Vehicle Limited Warranty period.

What to Expect at the Dealership:

  • Inspection: Your vehicle's history will be checked via the GM Global Warranty Management system to confirm if it's involved. If so, dealers will inspect the steering gear motor bolts for looseness.

    • If Bolts are Not Loose: No further action will be needed.

    • If Bolts are Loose: The following steps will be taken:

      • Replacement: The Electric Belt Drive Rack and Pinion Steering Gear will be replaced with one of the following part numbers, determined by your vehicle's VIN and the GM Electronic Parts Catalog:

        • 86544924

        • 86544930

        • 85068280

        • 85068279

      • Reprogramming: The power steering control module will be reprogrammed.

      • Alignment: Front toe will be measured and adjusted to ensure proper wheel alignment.

Service Procedure:

  1. Underbody Panels Removal: To access the steering gear, underbody panels might need removal.

  2. Inspection: Check for loose fasteners on the steering gear.

  3. Replacement: If necessary, remove the old steering gear and install a new one.

  4. Installation: Use the same procedures to install the new steering gear.

  5. Adjustment: Ensure proper wheel alignment by adjusting the front toe.

Important Notes:

  • Parts availability might be limited; dealers are advised against ordering these for shelf stock but only as needed.

  • Some parts might be non-returnable once removed from inventory systems, so dealers will check the status of parts before proceeding.

What You Should Do:

  • If you own one of the listed models from the 2024 model year, contact your local GM dealership to check if your vehicle is affected.

  • Schedule an appointment to have the inspection or necessary repairs performed at no cost to you under this service update.
