There are two important filter configurations to understand:

Gen 3 valve body:The updated GM/ACDelco Gen 3 transmission filter is required.

Why Are There Different 10L80 Transmission Filters?

GM has made multiple changes to the 10L80 transmission over its production life, including revisions to the valve body.

The most important recent change for transmission service is the introduction of the Gen 3 valve body.

The Gen 3 valve body uses a different transmission filter than the Gen 2 and earlier valve bodies.

GM parts information specifies that when a transmission receives the updated Gen 3 valve body, the corresponding updated transmission filter must also be installed.

The Gen 3 filter has a revised housing design.

One of the easiest visual differences is the shape and cutout of the filter housing. When the Gen 2 and Gen 3 filters are placed directly on top of each other, the additional filter housing/media area of the Gen 3 design becomes much easier to see.

The internal filter media is also visibly different.

We do not currently have enough verified technical information about the filtration specifications or micron ratings of the different media to claim that one media design filters better than another.

What we can verify is much more important:

The updated Gen 3 filter is specified for use with the Gen 3 valve body.

If your transmission has a Gen 3 valve body, use the correct Gen 3 filter.

Can You Use a Gen 2 Filter With a Gen 3 10L80 Valve Body?

We do not recommend it.

One reason this can become confusing is that our physical measurements showed many of the basic dimensions to be extremely similar.

The mounting bolt pattern is the same, and our basic measurements of installation depth were also effectively identical.

That does not mean the filters should be considered interchangeable.

The filter housings and internal media designs are different, and GM specifies the updated filter when the Gen 3 valve body is installed.

We have not intentionally tested an earlier Gen 2 filter on a Gen 3 valve body, and we do not recommend experimenting with the incorrect filter simply because it physically appears capable of bolting into place.

If you have a Gen 3 valve body, use the Gen 3 filter.

How Do I Know If My 10L80 Has a Gen 3 Valve Body?

This is where things get complicated.

You cannot always determine the installed valve body simply from the truck's VIN.

The Gen 3 valve body began appearing as an updated replacement during 2025. Consequently, two similar trucks can potentially have different valve body generations depending on their production date and previous repair history.

If your truck received a valve body replacement, review your repair invoice and determine which replacement valve body was installed.

If that information isn't available, identification may ultimately require inspecting the transmission after the pan is removed.

This is particularly important for trucks that had transmission repairs performed during the transition to the updated valve body.

What About 2026 and Newer Trucks?

Our current understanding is that 2026-model-year 10L80 applications received the newer Gen 3 valve body from production.

That makes the Gen 3 filter the expected filter for these applications.

ACDelco vs. PPE 10L80 Transmission Filter

For a Gen 2 or earlier 10L80, one of the biggest decisions is whether to purchase the ACDelco filter or the PPE replacement filter.

Both filters have a very similar external configuration and fit the earlier valve body application.

The major difference is price.

At the time of our comparison, the PPE filter was available for under $20, while the ACDelco filter was considerably more expensive.

Pricing changes constantly, so rather than publishing a price that may quickly become outdated, we recommend checking the current pricing before ordering.

For a compatible Gen 2 or earlier application, the PPE filter represents an excellent value and is the option we would strongly consider when servicing the transmission.

Installing a PPE deep transmission pan does not mean you automatically need a special extended or deeper transmission filter.

The filter still needs to match the valve body configuration in the transmission.

In other words:

PPE deep pan + Gen 2 valve body: Use the appropriate Gen 2-style filter.

PPE deep pan + Gen 3 valve body: Use the appropriate Gen 3 filter.

The pan itself does not determine which filter generation you need.

The transmission filter uses very thin aluminum bolts that are designed as one-time-use fasteners.

They stretch as they are tightened and should be replaced rather than reused during filter service.

Currently, these bolts may be supplied as part of a larger valve body bolt kit rather than being individually available as a pair. That means you may end up purchasing more bolts than are actually required for a simple filter replacement.
